Managing Documents

Presbyterian churches have a number of documents that lay out how individual churches are managed, in addition to the core system of beliefs for the church as a whole. The Constitution of the Presbyterian Church (USA) is contained in two books, The Book of Confessions and The Book of Order.

The core collection of beliefs can be found in The Book of Confessions . This book is managed by the national General Assembly, and is rarely changed. You can download a PDF copy of the current (2016) version by clicking here .

The governing documents, that describe how churches are to be established, managed and operated, are contained in The Book of Order . This book is also managed by the national General Assembly, and as it is updated, a revised version is issued every two years. You can download a PDF copy of the current version (2015 – 2017) by clicking here .

Individual churches also have Bylaws that set out the details of their operations. Bylaws do not overrule The Book of Order, but fill in the details within the general outlines that The Book of Order provides. You can download a copy of FPC’s Bylaws by clicking here .

Please note that FPC’s Bylaws are unique to FPC. Other Presbyterian churches will have their own Bylaws. However, all churches that are part of the Presbyterian Church (USA) are governed by The Book of Confessions and The Book of Order.
The Book of Confessions can also be downloaded in Spanish, Korean and Portuguese. Click here to visit the bookstore to download a free copy (note that this is the version before 2016).

The Book of Order can also be downloaded as a PDF in Spanish, Mandarin Chinese and Korean. Click here and search for 'book of order.'
